Police discovered a large-scale cannabis farm in an industrial unit in Prescot, posing a risk of fire and flooding to nearby residential homes. The operation was shut down, 820 plants and equipment were seized, and a suspect was arrested.

Homes were at 'risk of fire and flooding' due to what police found nearby. Officers carried out a raid at an industrial unit on Kelly Street in Prescot on Thursday, December 18. When inside, police discovered five growing rooms and three drying rooms, with a total of 820 plants along with equipment seized by specialist officers from Merseyside Police . Scottish Power confirmed the electricity was being abstracted, and made it safe.

A 30-year-old man from Huyton was arrested on suspicion of production of cannabis and taken to a police station for questioning. He has been released under investigation as enquiries continue. Chief Inspector Chris Ruane said: 'This was a large-scale cannabis farm in an industrial premises with the potential to spread harm across Knowsley and beyond. It is surrounded by residential homes and would have carried a real risk of fire and flooding to neighbouring properties. Thankfully it has now been made safe. “Drug dealers depend upon violence and intimidation to enforce their illicit trade, and they think nothing of bringing that to the doorsteps of those unfortunate enough to live or work close by. 'Information from those communities who notice suspicious signs can be vital in making such locations safe, so familiarise yourselves with them and come forward when you come across one.' Some of the signs that cannabis is being grown are: - Strange smells and sounds - Frequent and varied visitors to a property, often at unusual times - Gardening equipment being taken into a property, such as plant pots, fertiliser, fans and industrial lighting - Windows are sealed and covered or the curtains are permanently closed - Heat from an adjoining property - Birds gathering on a roof in cold weather Individually these activities may seem commonplace, however, together may indicate something more suspiciou
