Cape Town has been crowned the best city in the world for 2025 by Time Out, according to their prestigious 50 Best Cities in the World for 2025 index. The vibrant South African city secured the top spot thanks to its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and thriving cultural scene.
The ranking was determined through a global survey of over 18,500 city-dwellers who shared their insights on various aspects of life in their cities, including food, nightlife, culture, affordability, happiness, and overall vibe. A panel of over 100 city experts from Time Out's global network also contributed their perspectives on the most exciting cities worldwide.Combining the data from both sources, Time Out evaluated 44 different criteria to create the definitive list of the best cities to visit in 2025. Grace Beard, Travel Editor at Time Out, emphasizes the importance of local perspectives in shaping the ranking, stating, 'Our annual list of Time Out's Best Cities in the World right now proves that if you want to know what makes a city truly great, ask a local. Thousands of city-dwellers worldwide responded to our survey this year.' She further highlights that the list showcases cities where locals feel most at home and where visitors can experience world-class culture, delectable food, and exhilarating nightlife.Cape Town emerged as the clear winner, scoring highly across all categories. 82% of Capetonians described their city as beautiful, while an impressive 97% said it made them happy. The city offers a plethora of attractions, from visiting African penguin colonies and indulging in world-class wines to strolling along pristine Blue Flag beaches, enjoying breathtaking views from one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, and experiencing vibrant nightlife. Bangkok secured the second position, lauded for its friendly atmosphere, rich culture, and iconic landmarks like Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. The city's renowned food scene, ranging from street eats at Chatuchak Market to bold flavors in Yaowarat, earned high praise from locals, with 86% rating food in Bangkok as 'good' or 'amazing', and 84% finding it affordable. The expanded BTS Skytrain and MRT make exploring Bangkok easier than ever.New York City took the bronze medal, renowned for its constant buzz and ever-evolving cultural scene. Time Out describes New York as a city where 'FOMO is real – blink, and you might miss incredible public art, Michelin-starred pop-ups, or surprise concerts.' 78% of New Yorkers described the city as exciting, and an impressive 92% approved of its world-class arts and culture.Melbourne secured fourth place, thanks to its vibrant food and culture scenes. The city is renowned as Australia's culinary and cultural capital, boasting top dining spots, blockbuster shows, and Time Out's World's Coolest Street in 2024.London rounded out the top five, voted the most-loved city by Time Out experts. The UK capital remains a global powerhouse, attracting visitors with its diverse communities, iconic pubs, unparalleled shopping, and thriving nightlife.
