Alex Ovechkin’s two early goals provided the Capitals a lead they could not hold as the Hurricanes overwhelm Washington in the third period.

Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov stops a shot from Dylan Strome during the third period of Carolina's 4-2 come-from-behind win Friday. RALEIGH, N.C. — When Sebastian Aho tumbled to the ice with just over two minutes left in the game, referee Corey Syvret, believing Aho had been hooked by Washington Capitals defenseman Rasmus Sandin, thrust his arm into the air.

But two first-period goals from captain Alex Ovechkin gave the Capitals a lead that they didn’t relinquish until Martin Necas tied things up with 8:20 left in the third, and even after that, Washington found what it hoped would be enough momentum to at least force overtime. It took the Hurricanes until the 14:30 mark of the second period to finally solve Kuemper, though their pressure didn’t abate at any point. Guentzel found a lane between defensemen Rasmus Sandin and Trevor van Riemsdyk and chipped a bouncing, lobbed pass from Jaccob Slavin up and over Kuemper. Moments before Guentzel’s goal, Wilson was stopped on a breakaway, and center Connor McMichael fired into Kochetkov’s glove on a wide-open look — two missed chances that loomed large for Washington.

2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Predicted to be 'Extremely Active'2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Predicted to be 'Extremely Active'The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has been predicted to be 'extremely active,' according to Colorado State University (CSU) meteorologists. The meteorologists' predictions forecast that there will be 23 named storms in 2024, with 11 hurricanes and five major hurricanes. It's the highest number of hurricanes the meteorologists have predicted in their 41-year history of publishing the outlooks in April. Prior to this year, the highest number of predicted hurricanes made by the CSU team was for nine hurricanes in 1995, according to an Axios report. Record warm tropical and eastern subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures are cited as the primary reason behind the forecast, CSU said. In addition to above-average ocean temperatures, El Niño is expected to transition into La Niña by this summer or fall. El Niño and La Niña are two climate patterns that greatly impact Earth's weather.
