The family of national hero Captain Sir Tom Moore have been slammed after a report found his daughter and her husband pocketed £1million in his name
The family of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised nearly £39 million for NHS charities during the Covid-19 pandemic, has been criticised by the Charity Commission. The watchdog's report revealed that Sir Tom's daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, and her husband Colin, had gained "significant" financial benefit from their association with The Captain Tom Foundation.
It was revealed that sales from Captain Tom's autobiography 'Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day' did not benefit The Captain Tom Foundation. Despite Captain Tom writing in the book's foreword about his opportunity to raise more funds for the foundation established in his name, an advance of £1.4m for the three-book deal was paid to Club Nook - a company where the Ingram-Moores serve as directors, reports the Mirror.
It urged the couple to make a "suitable donation" to fulfil the commitment Captain Tom made in the book's foreword. The report also found evidence that Mrs Ingram-Moore had set out expectations for a £150,000 salary prior to becoming the charity's chief executive. Although planners initially gave significant weight to the charity's intended use of the proposed building, the £200,000 structure was later demolished after a revised planning application omitted any mention of "charity" or "foundation". The authors of the report suggest that the couple may have been using the charity and its name for their own private benefit.
While the commission has not demanded the closure of the Captain Tom Foundation, a family lawyer previously suggested it might shut down. The foundation ceased accepting donations in the summer of 2023.
