A New Year's Eve car meet in Colwick, Nottinghamshire, involving over 100 vehicles, resulted in flares and fireworks being set off in roundabouts, raising safety concerns. Nottinghamshire Police issued a £100 fine to a driver for breaching a public space protection order (PSPO) aimed at curbing car cruising in the area.
Over 100 vehicles assembled in Colwick on New Year's Eve, setting off flares and fireworks in the middle of roundabouts. Nottinghamshire Police is actively addressing the recurring issue of car meet s in Gedling following this latest incident, which they deem put 'people at risk of serious harm'. One driver has since been fined £100 for violating a public space protection order (PSPO) implemented in June 2023.
This order prohibits car cruisers from congregating in areas including Netherfield and Colwick, empowering officers to issue fines. A previous PSPO was in effect from January 2018 to January 2021, and the regulations apply not only to drivers but also to passengers and spectators. Residents in parts of Netherfield and Colwick previously experienced months of disruption due to individuals racing vehicles and revving their engines around the Colwick Loop Road, Mile End Road, and the Victoria Retail Park. While incidents have subsided since then, the New Year's Eve gathering in Colwick once again witnessed dangerous driving and antisocial behavior.Gedling Inspector Heather Harding stated, 'Car cruising, racing, and dangerous driving endanger the people in our community, as well as those participating. This New Year's Eve incident involved approximately 100 vehicles converging in one location, cars losing control, and flares being set off, affecting other drivers—putting people at serious risk of harm. We've been working to reduce this type of activity for several years and continue to listen to residents in affected areas to minimize this type of crime. We are collaborating closely with the council to address the issue and will continue taking action against anyone found violating the order or engaging in criminal behavior. We want everyone using our roads to be safe, so if you are racing, causing a nuisance, and endangering other motorists and pedestrians, expect us to take action.' Since the PSPO's implementation in June 2023, 16 Fixed Penalty Notices have been issued, all of which have been paid in full. Councillor John Clarke, Gedling Borough Council's leader, added, 'We take breaches of the PSPO very seriously, and this recent case highlights the importance of these measures in addressing antisocial behavior. We are aware of the damage that these illegal gatherings inflict on local communities, and we are doing everything in our power to put a stop to them.
