A care assistant in Scotland has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for violently shaking a nine-week-old baby, leading to severe injuries including eleven fractured bones. Jose Herreros, 26, admitted to the assault after a health worker noticed bruising on the baby's face.
A care assistant who inflicted horrific injuries upon a nine-week-old baby by violently shaking him has been imprisoned and prohibited from any contact with his victim. Jose Herreros, 26, seized hold of the infant by his body and forcefully shook him, resulting in serious injuries including eleven fractured bones in his ribs and legs. Herreros's heinous act came to light when a health worker observed bruising on the baby's face during a home visit and recommended immediate hospitalization.
Horrified by the discovery, the health worker alerted authorities, leading to Herreros's apprehension. He ultimately admitted to the shocking attack after appearing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last year. During his sentencing hearing on Monday, Sheriff Christopher Dickson condemned Herreros's actions, stating, 'Given the nature and the seriousness of this offence, I consider a custodial sentence the only appropriate disposal in this case.' Herreros's harrowing crime unfolded in May 2022 when he was employed as a part-time care assistant tasked with looking after the baby while his mother was hospitalized. A routine health check conducted the following month by a health worker revealed a bruise on the baby's right cheek. Further examination at the Royal Hospital for Children in Edinburgh uncovered additional bruises on his cheek and nose. Subsequent skeletal surveys revealed three fractured ribs and four fractures in each leg. Medical professionals concluded that the injuries were not consistent with any plausible medical explanation and determined the child required protection from further harm. Based on the injuries and the circumstances, it was established that the baby had been 'gripped tightly and shaken,' an act that could have been inflicted over a short period of 30 seconds.Herreros, from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, later confessed to his crime in an email sent to police and social services on June 28, 2022. He expressed remorse and willingness to face the consequences of his actions. The young victim has since made a full recovery from his injuries.
