The road was uncovered not far from Hadrian's Wall and was described as 'beautifully preserved'.
Archaeologists and volunteers have unearthed a 1,900-year-old Roman road during a dig near an ancient bathhouse., also uncovered timber buildings, believed to be shops, as well as ovens and mill stones.Members of the public are invited to visit the dig which ends later.
He said the road was probably built around AD128 and was likely still being used in the 13th Century as a silver coin with the head of Edward I was found on it. "They are very well trained volunteers but there are new people joining all the time and we have 1,600 members in our group who are passionate about the archaeology of Carlisle."
