Ranked third in the world, the Spaniard becomes the first male player to win his first three Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces.

Carlos Alcaraz made history with his 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Germany’s Alexander Zverev on Sunday in Paris, a dramatic match with wild swings of momentum that lasted more than four hours on Roland Garros’s red clay.

Just six other men have won Grand Slam titles on all three surfaces: Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Mats Wilander. Alcaraz is the only one to do so before turning 22.The French Open hasn’t had a first-time winner since Djokovic won his inaugural title at Roland Garros in 2016.
