Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz opens up about his second year with the ScuderiaCarlos Sainz signed a contract extension with Ferrari
that will see him drive for the Italian team until 2024. But that does not mean it has been plain sailing for the Spaniard in 2022. So far, he has suffered six retirements this season, and trails his teammate Charles Leclerc by 63 points in the championship. He also currently holds P6 in the drivers’ championship, which can be considered last in the battle between Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes.and has stood on the podium eight times. Sainz also achieved his maiden pole position at the British Grand Prix.Sainz discussed his “nightmare” year with Motorsport.com.
“I know how to drive. It’s instinctive. I don’t think about my driving anymore. And you can see the times come much easier. I’m back to a level where I should have been at the beginning of the year.”A task that the Spaniard believes he has now accomplished. Although Sainz admits “now I am at this level, our car is not necessarily as good.” In fact, when reviewing his season overall, Sainz does not hold back.
“This season has been a nightmare, to tell you the truth, because of all this – all the retirements. I was slow when the car was fast, and now I’m fast, but we are not as fast as before. Nothing is right!”
