City wants more say in runway extension and other changes outlined by San Diego County's update of airport master plan

Carlsbad's City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday to clarify the city's code requirements and permit review procedures for any new or expanded uses of McClellan-Palomar Airport. Members of the Citizens for a Friendly Airport, a local group formed six years ago, requested and supported the resolution. They said it will give the city more control over the single-runway airport owned and operated by San Diego County.

The county proposed to revise or improve parts of the airport and extend the runway to support a larger fleet of business jets and other aircraft over the 20-year life of the updated plan. More and larger business jets already have begun using the airport, county officials said, and so the runway should be lengthened for the safety of those using it now. Citizens group members objected, saying the extension would be an unauthorized expansion of the airport.
