A major expansion project at Carlton le Willows Academy in Nottinghamshire has been plagued by unexpected cost overruns exceeding £1 million due to the discovery of asbestos during construction. The project, completed in October 2024, aimed to accommodate an additional 300 students. However, unforeseen circumstances related to construction methods and asbestos presence have significantly increased the final cost.

A major expansion project at Carlton le Willows Academy in Nottinghamshire has faced significant cost overruns exceeding £1 million due to the discovery of asbestos during construction. The project, completed in October 2024, aimed to accommodate an additional 300 students with the addition of a new two-storey building, featuring a dining hall and 20 classrooms.

The expansion also included the conversion of the existing dining area and assembly hall into more teaching space, along with the creation of a new car park with nearly 100 spaces.Nottinghamshire County Council, which funded the project, originally allocated nearly £11 million for the expansion. However, due to unforeseen circumstances related to construction methods and asbestos presence, the final cost ballooned to over £15 million, a staggering £1,180,053 over the initial budget. Michael Bexton, the council director, explained in a report published on January 13th that the cost overruns stemmed from two primary factors. Firstly, inappropriate construction methods used in the original building were only revealed after demolition and strip-out works were underway. Secondly, a large amount of asbestos was discovered during these works, necessitating costly removal measures. The report also highlights that previous contractors had left asbestos on-site from earlier projects, further exacerbating the issue. To address the increased demand for classroom space, the council requested the school to admit additional Year 7 students from September 2022, even before the project's completion. This early intake necessitated additional temporary classroom space at an additional cost of £200,000. The council assures that similar issues encountered in this project will be identified and effectively managed in future endeavors.
