Carmarthenshire County Council has referred the most claimants to bailiffs for housing benefit repayments, with around 1,025 customers facing demands. Only about half of English and Welsh councils have formal policies to assist vulnerable residents in debt.
Around 2.3 million Brits claim housing benefit which helps pay rent when unemployed, on a low income, or claiming other benefits. The benefit amount depends on the size of the property, income, and special circumstances. Administered by local authorities, Carmarthenshire County Council referred the most claimants to bailiffs for housing benefit repayments, with around 1,025 customers facing such demands.
While the council claims to intervene early and help residents access support, only 48% of English and Welsh councils have formal policies to recognize and assist vulnerable residents. Bailiffs must give at least seven days' notice before their first visit and cannot use force to enter the home. They cannot take essential items like clothing, bedding, or basic kitchen equipment
