'I think I’ve been underestimated' 🟠 As she takes to the stage in Bath, Caroline Quentin talks to _annabonet about censorship, sex work, collaborating with her daughter and first-night nerves
to help foot the bills. Quentin agrees. “It’s only going to increase. As my character says at one point, it is not a job any woman does for pleasure.”
On publication, the play was banned for 30 years, but Quentin says there’s no place for censorship nowadays. “It’s a difficult and thorny issue, but one of the one of the things about democracy is people should be entitled a voice, however much you might disagree with their views. History has told us that silencing anybody is a mistake, because what happens is it goes underground. And things grow in a dark and damp climate.
“I’m trying not to interfere with her too much,” she adds. “Though I do keep telling her to stop biting her nails and it’s driving her mad.” The play premiers in just under a fortnight, so how are the pair feeling? “I’m always terribly nervous,” Quentin says. “I asked Rose how she’ll feel on the first night and she said she might be sick, and I said I might, too. I think we’ll help each other. It’s a big deal for both of us. It’s the most daunting part I’ve ever played.”
