The A555 Manchester Airport relief road, which has been closed due to flooding and subsequent icy conditions, is finally seeing the recovery of stranded vehicles. Cars were left trapped after heavy rainfall on New Year's Day, followed by snowfall and ice.

Drivers may soon be able to use the A555 again as cars stuck on the Manchester Airport relief road for a week are being recovered. A number of vehicles have been left stranded and frozen on the notorious link road, which straddles the border between Greater Manchester and Cheshire. The road was forced to close due to severe flooding on New Year's Day, after downpours hit the area as 2025 began. Floodwater subsided as last week went on, with the road partially reopened.

But following periods of heavy snow and ice which began at the weekend, most of the road has remained out of action this week. Cars which had previously been submerged on the road remained stranded, as floodwater returned. Now, the cars are finally being removed from the road. Images from the scene this afternoon (January 8), seen by the Manchester Evening News, show cars being taken away from the road on recovery trucks. Separate photos shared with the M.E.N. show workers on the road, with vans, at around 11am today. The images, taken from the Lakeland bridge junction, show three cars waiting to be recovered. They are a silver Jaguar, a grey Mercedes-Benz and a black BMW estate. The A555 remains fully closed due to the weather between Roy Chadwick Way, in Woodford, and Wilmslow Road, in Handforth. It is also closed westbound from Wilmslow Road to Styal Road, in Heald Green. The A555 has been a repeat hotspot for flooding since it first opened in 2018
