UK cases of the Indian coronavirus variant have doubled to 400 in the past week
They are currently designated as ‘variants under investigation’ rather than ‘variants of concern’, such as the Kent, Brazil and South Africa strains.It also identified 202 cases of one new strain, B.1.617.2 and five cases of the other, B.1.617.3 – which are said to be ‘geographically dispersed in England’.
However, there is no evidence the variants are more serious than others previously identified – or that they could make the current vaccines less effective.The figures also show there have been a total of 226,635 confirmed cases of the B.1.1.7 Kent variant, with almost 8,500 in the past week.The variants have been designated as ‘under investigation’
But it comes as new analysis showed Covid-19 cases have plunged to below 50 cases per 100,000 people in more than 95% of local areas across Britain. The combined impact of lockdowns and the coronavirus vaccine rollout are said to have driven down the spread of the disease. were this morning invited to book their first jab – the third time this week the age threshold has been lowered on the national booking system.
