Friday night's 1-1 tie with unbeaten Orlando could mark a turning point for San Diego: 'I thought we were the better team'

As interesting as the Wave’s match Friday were coach Casey Stoney’s comments afterward. Stoney said she’s more concerned with how the Wave perform, at least for now, than final outcomes such as Friday's 1-1 tie with the unbeaten Orlando Pride. Of course it matters which side wins, loses or ties the game. But what matters more, Stoney implied, is playing well.

She said the players made good use of triangle alignments, a soccer staple at all levels. She suggested more patience there might pay off going forward. Looking ahead in a journey that runs into November, if the Wave can build upon their emerging build-up game to go with their defense — the strength of each of Stoney’s three cubs — a trip to an enlarged postseason should follow. But two other pieces to the soccer puzzle required Stoney's evaluation coming out of Friday night's match.
