'I can't believe they've just taken her away from me. I can't understand it, can't get it out of my head. They've absolutely torn my heart out.'
A Carlisle woman has been left "utterly heartbroken" after her beloved pet was shot and killed with an air rifle.
Speaking through tears, Lauren told CumbriaLive: "I got home from work and done a few bits in the house first. I opened the back door and saw she wasn't there. I went to the front to shout on her. Lauren turned her beloved cat over and Marlee was just floppy. While on the phone with her partner, Lauren's neighbour knocked on the window to tell her to keep her cat inside because 'my cat is at the vets because it has been shot'.
After rushing Marlee to the vet, they didn't know if she would make it through the night. Lauren said she had to make the decision whether to leave Marlee at the vets or bring her home. She was contacted the following morning to say Marlee hadn't made it through the night. “The RSPCA is appalled that people take pleasure from cruelly and deliberately targeting animals in this way but sadly, these types of incidents are not uncommon. In 2021 we received 454 calls about animals being shot, injured or killed with air guns - the majority of these concerned cats or wildlife.
