CDC study shows high levels of carcinogenic gas near Waukegan, Gurnee facilities
CHICAGO -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released an air study near Vantage Specialty Chemicals manufacturing facility in Gurnee and the Medline Industries medical sterilization facility in Waukegan . The study found high levels of ethylene oxide , a gas that can cause cancer. For years, the CBS 2 Investigators documented cases of cancer in the areas around the manufacturing plants.
Brad Schneider , founder and chair of the Congressional Ethylene Oxide Task Force, issued a statement on the report Friday along with U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin , and Sen. Tammy Duckworth : 'Today's report shows that stringent emissions controls and ambient air monitoring appear to be effective in helping ensure the air is safe to breathe for residents living near facilities that use ethylene oxide ,' the lawmakers said.
