But the new funding has fueled tensions over money previously given to Florence which was originally promised to help fill empty storefronts
San Francisco is close to accepting $2 million of state grant money to upgrade two city-owned restaurant kiosks in Union Square that celebrity chef Tyler Florence took over last year to much fanfare.
“A large portion of that money was siphoned off to concessions in Union Square, which is a good thing, but it was not what the money was promised for,” said Peskin, who helped secure the funding at the board, in a recent interview. The awarding of the original city grant to Florence’s company later offended Board of Supervisors President Peskin, who represents Union Square, when he learned the money came from $2 million that he and Mayor London Breed had promised would be used to get tenants into empty storefronts lining lower Powell Street.
London Breed visiting China in April, Mayor's Office says Her staff left the door open for Breed to once again broach the possibility of pandas coming to The City In a November letter to Peskin, Sarah Dennis Phillips, executive director of the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, acknowledged the earlier promises about investing to fill Powell Street storefronts.
