EXCLUSIVE: Dapper TV star Tom Read Wilson opens up on the I'm A Celeb jungle, the new series of Celebs Go Dating and his desire to start a family of his own soon, coupled up or single
Celebs Go Dating client co-ordinator, I'm A Celeb alum and all round walking dictionary , Tom Read-Wilson has to be one of the sweetest, most charming stars on our small screen.
When new magazine catches up with the dapper 39-year-old to discuss a new campaign with Imperial Leather about bringing a little 'fancy' into your life, he tells us animatedly about the new series of CGD, who he stays in touch with from the jungle and his hopes to start a family - whether he's found The One or not... Tom! Do tell us you watched I'm A Celeb All Stars this year - what a shocker...
Well, this sounds terrible but I deliberately didn't watch it. None of us have from last year, we said because our own memories are so strong we didn't feel ready. I don't want anything to eclipse my own experience yet. You guys seemed like a more harmonious bunch...
Well, we knew early on that what we had cemented lasting friendships. And in a funny way, that made it easier when people left because though we missed them, we knew that we'd stay in touch.. Who do you stay in touch with most? All of them, we still have a WhatsApp group.
I have such a soft spot for Ruby Wax . I was at hers the other weekend. She has a beautiful house in London, and there was a photographic portrait on the wall of Alan Rickman. She said he was really one of her best chums.
We had tea, pain au chocolate, a lovely catch-up, then I went to a calisthenics class in the park! You got on well with Aitch, didn't you? Oh, darling, Aitch, who lives in this neighbouring village in Greater Manchester to my sister and three nephews, who I'm very close to. I spend about a third of my life up there visiting them.
We bet you're the coolest uncle... I hope so. They're certainly the coolest nephews. They are just delicious, funny and zestful.
They bring out my inner child - but also my inner broodiness. I'm hankering for a child. Are you single? At one point you called yourself a 'serial dater'...
I am. Yes, that was a few years ago but I've gotten out of the way of dating. Maybe it was Covid but I just really like my own company. And being able to kind of... do everything when I want to.
I'm not on the apps. How come you're not on the apps? I believe in meeting people organically. I am slightly eccentric, I march to the beat of my own drum, so you sort of need to meet me to know if you're going to want to date me or not!
Is becoming a dad more important than finding The One, then? Oh, yes. It's so funny, my best friend adores dogs, and I'm obsessed with babies. If we go to the park, it takes us forever as I have to coo at every baby and he has to stop every time he sees a dog!
Would you be prepared to start a family on your own? Yes, that would be lovely. My ambition is to really get my ducks in a row so that I can do that and know that I have the right support system around me. Celebs Go Dating is back - you're like part of the furniture by now!
Haha, yes. I do love that show. I just love it, it's working with my best friends. Paul C Brunson for instance, I know very well - I know his wife and kids, I was there for brunch recently.
He is a fascinating, deeply altruistic, darling man. Our friendship is one of the most enriching relationships I've ever had in my life. What do you make of this year's unlucky-in-love celebrities? Well James Haskell is so naughty- he's very twinkly and delightful.
And MAFs star Lucinda Light is wonderful, she's quite a poet, she's adorable. Coleen Nolan is a darling... David Potts came back a second time and he has really grown - he was so good at dating! Any other exciting projects coming up, Tom?
Yes, I'll be back with another series of The Taste Test Restaurant on Channel 5, where diners are all presented with food as they would be in an ordinary restaurant, but with supermarket brands. I'm also doing a one-man show at the Edinburgh festival this summer, entitled A to Z, where I will offer up an anecdote about my life and career from every letter of the alphabet. I'm nervous, but excited!
Tell us about the fun Imperial Leather campaign you're involved with... Well it's based on a study where they found, staggeringly, 31% of Brits pretend to be a bit fancier than they truly are. I do it, a little bit. I think of the reaction to Cleopatra when she went to Rome for the first time, and all the ladies wanted to copy her hairdo and the way she bathed, on a shoestring.
It's about bringing the 'fancy' into your day-to-day life. What gives you that touch of fancy at home? Well, lots of things, but I do have this huge cheese plant in my little flat, which totally dwarfs it and cost an absolute fortune, but is just so cheering to look at. I've rinsed out an old champagne bottle to water it with and it really tickles me, because it looks like it's guzzling champagne!
