Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano is not naive about the big picture, but this would be a shame, he said.

Rutgers offensive lineman Hollin Pierce works during the Scarlet Knights training camp practice, Monday, July 29, 2024, in Piscataway, N.J.First, the Rutgers football player had to beat the odds to earn a walk-on opportunity to join the team. Then, he had to beat the scales.

“I think it’s just awful because you look at walk-on football players, they’ve been such a critical part of the game of college football,” Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said last week after his team’s first training camp practice. “I’m just sad about it, but I understand what’s goin on. I’m not naïve. I just wish it didn’t have to be that way.”

“You don’t come in as a walk-on expecting anything,” said Dremel, who led Rutgers in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns last season. “You come in just trying to do whatever you can to help the team win. The first four years of my career, that’s what I did. I played my role to the best of my ability and tried to help the team any way that I could.”, the Rutgers coach has a record of speaking out on player rights.
