West Brom will not meet the £6million asking price set by Celtic to sign Mikey Johnston on a permanent transfer this summer., former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie was left stunned at the price tag and insisted no club would be willing to match their valuation.
McAvennie raised concerns that his failure to nail down a starting place at Parkhead amid inconsistent performances would be an issue for buying clubs. Johnston made his Celtic debut in 2017 but has since featured just 92 times for the club in seven years, leading to questions about his ability. However, after moving on loan to West Brom in the second half of last season, he scored seven goals and picked up two assists in 20 games and established himself as a key player under Carlos Corberan.
The Baggies are now keen on making his loan deal permanent this summer and have begun exploring their options for the dealAnother loan deal remains an option for Johnston, but McAvennie claimed he would need to up his game to prove he is worthy of a £6million price tag. It’s not about what he’s worth, he’s been at Celtic for seven or eight years and never managed to tie down a first-team place.
