“We just couldn’t pass on the opportunity, to get a guy like Jrue,” says Brad Stevens of the deal with Portland.
in all sorts of big games throughout his career. The organization’s key decision-makers, including Brad Stevens, long ago developed a thorough appreciation of Holiday’s relentless competitiveness and easily apparent team-first mentality. From afar, Stevens suggested Monday, the Celtics started seeing Holiday as an ideal fit for their franchise years before the path to acquiring him materialized last week.
Monday’s media day offered Stevens, coach Joe Mazzulla and the Celtics players their first chances to address the Holiday acquisition publicly. While it’s no surprise they sounded emotional to lose two key pieces in Brogdon and Williams, the team’s most important voices emphasized just how much they expect Holiday to provide. If his reputation is accurate, Holiday should bring the Celtics far more than just points, rebounds, assists and high-level defense.
Jayson Tatum called Jrue Holiday one of the most respected guys in the NBA. Said he's happy to have him though he's also sad to lose Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams.“Having the opportunity to play with Jrue, somebody that I respect so much and look from afar with admiration, just the type of player he is, the type of person he is, he’s about the right things and winning and competing,” Horford said.
“As time went on, I think we all became a little bit more inquisitive,” Stevens said. “Or, wondering if Portland was going to end up getting somebody that they would then move on from as a result of moving Dame. And so we were monitoring it like the rest of the league.”
