When the Celtics fell behind by nine points early in the fourth quarter, the old demons were circling. “Everybody asks, what did we learn (from the finals loss)?” ByJayKing on Boston's mindset during their overtime win over Golden State.
“You’re going to need games like this, right?” Tatum said. “There’s gonna be a handful of playoff games where you don’t necessarily shoot the ball well, maybe even on the road, under 40 percent, 73 percent from the free throw line, 17 turnovers and still find a way to win. I think that just shows the depth of our team, that on a below-average night for us, we can still find a way to win. That’s all that matters at the end of the night.
The Celtics won. In this matchup, it mattered to them that they did. Twice in the first quarter, Horford hitwith the “too little” celebration after scoring on the Warriors wing in the post. Later, after tracking down Poole from behind for a block at the rim, Horford glared while bringing the ball up the court. He doesn’t usually pull out that type of spice, at least during the regular season, but the sight of the Warriors charged the veteran emotionally.
After the Celtics lost to the Warriors in December, Brown suggested his team played “tense” basketball. Boston showed hints of a similar tightness again. On one possession, Brown launched a quick shot over Wiggins that hit nothing but air. Even with a 17-14 lead, Mazzulla called an early timeout while the Celtics had the ball in transition. They seemed too eager, like they hoped they could overturn the finals result with a big enough first-quarter run. They knew they couldn’t, of course.
“I think the first time we played them in San Francisco, I felt like we bought into that rematch of the finals, ABC game, first time back since we lost,” said Tatum. “Everybody wanted to win so bad, and I think that was the first time all season that we played out of character, that we played tense. And we just kind of talked about it today like, the fact of the matter is we lost; we lost the championship. No one win can bring that back. We can’t go back and change that.
Like old times, the Celtics couldn’t always solve the Warriors defense. Near the end of the first half, the game started to feel like it could turn into a finals rerun. After forcing a turnover, the Celtics had an opportunity to extend a two-point lead, but Tatum lost possession while heading the other way. Curry picked up the loose ball and fired it up from beyond halfcourt. If anyone else had launched a shot from there, the odds of it going in would have been minuscule.
