While most people want to stay in the A/C during hot weeks, first responders have a job that could throw them right in the fire.

It's not easy to brave the heat. While most people want to stay in the A/C during hot weeks like we're seeing in central Ohio , first responders have a job that could literally throw them right into the fire. The majority of our runs were heat-related," Whiting said. "When people’s lives were at risk, we are working harder, we are working faster and our firefighters push themselves to the limit.

"As soon as you put this gear on, you start sweating, and as soon as you step out into the sun, you are probably soaked already," Whiting said. With it being that much hotter on a day like today, it’s all very taxing," said Pleasant Township firefighter, Christopher Kurowski. "Throughout the day we just keep pounding waters.""We try to acclimate ourselves the best way possible to be prepared for those situations," Kurowski said.

The one major adjustment Whiting said they have had to make during the hottest weeks of the year is calling in extra agencies and resources to assist on scene. When it gets hot like this, we have to call for help a lot sooner than we normally would," Whiting said. "Sometimes it’s a second alarm or greater, so we can get extra companies to assist. It's just for relief. When it gets so hot, our firefighters will get fatigued a lot faster."and paramedic units also assist their department when they make emergency response runs on hot days.

"We set up rehab for our firefighters so they can get water. We do their vitals and give them rest," Whiting said.
