Start Beyond co-founder Angus Stevens spent his childhood dreaming of playing rugby for Australia. Now, his hero is footballer Lionel Messi.

ngus Stevens is chief executive and co-founder at Start Beyond, a company specialising in virtual reality and augmented reality training programs. He lives in Sydney.Under sixes when I was four – I couldn’t wait to be five. The dew on the grass, attacking the goal and running like my life depended on it.

Angus Stevens loves soccer for the fun of it and because “it’s endlessly strategic, and so full of variables”.I’m a member of the mighty Marrickville Football Club Over 45s and I play every weekend, every year, during winter.Did you ever want to play in the big league? I quit soccer when I was eight because rugby was the only game on offer at my school. I spent my childhood dreaming of playing for the Wallabies and kicking the penalty from the sideline to win back the Bledisloe Cup. And for 20 years I’ve been waiting for the Wallabies to fulfil this dream. It is all centred on efficiency of movement combined with making sure I run myself ragged, so in the games my body can try to keep up with what my brain wants to do.

Lionel Messi – so good for so long, and then he reinvented himself to keep being brilliant by setting up others with such skillful and generous assists. Even as time marches on and younger players take his mantle, he’s maintained his poise and the respect of the footballing community. In the last game before COVID-19 stopped the season, I had a shot at goal from somewhere between halfway and the goal square, and miraculously it soared over the goalie and inside the top left netting.

When it comes to training, Stevens works hard to ensure his “body can try to keep up with what my brain wants to do”.Listen! From the age of eight until I joined the Over 45s I hadn’t played a single competitive game, so it was a huge learning curve. These older Greeks and South Americans who took me under their wing were so knowledgeable and welcoming. They’ve spent their lives with a ball at their feet, and even now remain super skillful. Listening to them, and taking on board their advice.
