EXCLUSIVE: Cerys Matthews has opened up about her dreams for her wildly popular Radio 6 show and also teased new music could be on the way, saying she's 'still active'

Cerys Matthews shot to fame in the 1990s as a member of Welsh rock band Catatonia and has gone on to have a hugely successful and varied career in the spotlight. She's released several solo albums and penned a number of books, but it's her weekly Radio 6 show which has really captured fans over recent years.

"Oh my gosh. I've been thinking quite a lot. I'd love to interview Chrissie Hynde, Debbie Harry, Nina Persson from The Cardigans about songwriting. Kate Bush - the same - and some amazing songwriters out there," she excitedly tells us. So, is that the secret to having a successful radio show? Cerys tells OK! she feels that the element of "surprise" her show includes may be what appeals to the public, as well as the wide variety of guests. She tells us: "What I love about music is that there's something for everybody and that everybody has got their own unique taste. I think what's fresh, or a little different about my show is that it is so completely eclectic.

Joining the Radio 6 family has come with some extra opportunities for Cerys too. The network launched 6 Music Festival in 2014, which has proven to be a fantastic springboard for both emerging artists and well-known musicians. Stars such as Blur's Damon Albarn, Royal Blood, The Charlatans, Foals, Depeche Mode and Christine and the Queens have all performed at the festival over the years.

The 2024 edition saw American indie rock band Gossip perform their first UK show in four years, making for a hugely memorable moment. Other artists such as CMAT, Jordan Rakei and The Smile all took to the stage at this year's event, which ran from 7 - 10 March. "And if we've got half of the content or whatever, the percentages of six music coming from Manchester. We've got the studios, we've got the DJs, we've got the community building really well in Manchester. It makes a lot of sense to have Manchester as the home of the festival."
