Champion boxer and top class photographer Hugh Russell's death has sparked an outpouring of tributes across Northern Ireland.
His death following a short illness on Friday has sent shockwaves through the community, leading to an outpouring of tributes and grief. His fellow Irish News snapper Mal McCann said he is "absolutely devastated that my friend, colleague and champion Hugh Russell has passed away today".Irish News sports editor, Paul McConville, added that Hugh was a "champion boxer and top class photographer but a friend and colleague who was always on hand to lend some sage advice or lighten the mood with a wise crack and that cheeky grin. RIP Champ".
While Irish Boxing, paid tribute to 'Little Red' Hugh Russell saying he was a "legend of Irish boxing at amateur, professional, and board level and one of the nicest men you could ever meet". Sinn Fein's MP, John Finucane, said: "Very sad to hear the news that Hugh Russell has passed away after a short illness. Whether it was through his work at the Irish News or as a huge figure in the boxing world, Hugh was an incredible person who was widely liked & respected. A true gentleman, my thoughts are with his wife Kathleen and all his family & friends."
