Business leader, communications professional served community, elevated Black journalism for decades, family says
In 1989, Washington acquired the widely-read North Texas African American newsweekly that his son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Jessica Washington, now own and operate.Patrick said his father, who was born and raised in Chicago, brought to Dallas fearless and innovative ideas that elevated the Black business community during a time it wasn’t always welcome.
“The most important thing that he did was he made sure that the paper was not just a newspaper, but that they were heavily involved in supporting things in the community,” said Victoria Meek, Washington’s ex-wife and mother of his children Patrick and Elena.“He always said, ‘I’ve got to make this work because I’ve got to have something to give to my children,’ ” Meek said.
