Boerne Champion junior Elizabeth Leachman cleared a field of collegiate runners to win the 5,000 meters and set a national record at the Texas Relays.
AUSTIN — Although Elizabeth Leachman has normalized the amazing, it didn’t stop her from hammering another jaw-dropping moment at the Texas Relays on Thursday night. As the only high school entry in a field of 22 college competitors in the 5,000-meter women’s invitational, the Boerne Champion sophomore not only won with ease, she broke the national high school record in the event with a time of 15 minutes, 25.27 seconds.
Your all-access pass to the best high school sports coverage in San Antonio Leachman won Thursday’s race by nearly 35 seconds, a seemingly unfathomable cushion against a college field. The records didn’t end there. Leachman broke the previous meet record set in 1984. She beat the Myers Stadium record by five seconds. Leachman took the lead early and never trailed. She steadily built her lead while the rest of the field faded slowly. Only Leachman can make a 12 ½-lap race a no-doubter.
