Dozens of charities last night warned Rachel Reeves that the removal of the subsidy, in addition to rising tariffs, could create a 'public health emergency' and 'additional winter deaths'.
Labour's 'harsh' decision to axe Winter Fuel Payments could leave millions of pensioners in cold homes later this year, the Chancellor has been warned.
10 million pensioners will be stripped of the benefit, with people on incomes as low as £1,000 a month affected from this winter. The government has confirmed that the Winter Fuel Payment will only be retained for people who receive Pension Credit, but it is thought that as many as 1.2 million eligible pensioners are not currently claiming it
'It results in these people turning to an NHS that is already under stress and in some cases, can result in additional winter deaths.
