Channel small boat crossings set to surge in heatwave as Border Force union warns of ‘unacceptable pressure’A group of migrants attempt to cross the Channel – the busiest shipping lane in the world – on 29 August. Border Force officers are bracing for a surge in migrant boat crossings this week as people smugglers look to cash in on the September heatwave.
Dr Peter Walsh, senior researcher and lecturer at the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, said that the good weather was likely to lead to “big numbers” crossing this week. “We understand as well from people on the ground, that people are accumulating in and around Calais and so I think that with the fair weather, it is reasonable to expect big numbers this week,” he said.
Migration expert Dr Walsh also warned that the end of summer may not bring a reduction in small boat arrivals, withSo far this year, more than 20,000 people have arrived in the UK by small boat. The previous high on a single day for 2023 was when 756 people made the crossing on 10 August.
