Charge dropped against former Hays County corrections officer in inmate’s 2022 shooting death.
Officials have dropped a felony charge against a former Hays County corrections officer who shot and killed an inmate in 2022, Hays County District Attorney Kelly Higgins said Thursday. Isaiah Garcia , a former Hays County Sheriff’s Office employee, was indicted in April 2023 on a charge of deadly conduct in the fatal shooting of Joshua Wright , 36.

A Hays County grand jury declined to charge Garcia with murder or manslaughter, but did indict him on the deadly conduct charge for firing his weapon inside the crowded hospital, according to the district attorney’s office. The district attorney’s office said after weighing a number of factors, “the state moved to dismiss the case against Isaiah Garcia today and the court dismissed the case.
