Bed poverty can include children sleeping on the floor or sharing beds for all sorts of reasons
A charity in Nottingham is battling a hidden problem in the city by supplying beds to families in need. The Forget-Me-Notts project has given almost 600 beds to children and families across Nottinghamshire since 2016, in some cases helping to keep children with their families and preventing them from being taken into care.
The Forget-Me-Notts project was initially created by local lady, Anthea Wainwright, in September 2006 as a way to give chocolates to young people in the care system or in need during Easter and Christmas. However, after Andrea became ill she approached Brad and Cyrilyn Moore at Operation Orphan, which is a charity based in Nottingham.
Forget-Me-Notts has now provided 568 beds to children and their families in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and it is working hard to help the county's most vulnerable children with their practical emergency needs. The organisation has also helped 1,157 children through individual referrals across the city and county, such as through social workers or schools.
It adds: "Bed poverty has a profound impact on so many aspects of their lives and we are focused on providing complete bed solutions for the children and parents." One particular family helped by the project received support after being referred by a local headteacher who became aware of the family’s situation. They had been in and out of refuges until they finally found a home, and moved in with just a plastic bag each.
