Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer on Tuesday promised to quash the impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas “as quickly as possible.”
The New York Democrat offered few procedural details ahead of the House on Wednesday, delivering the Senate two articles of impeachment that accuse Mr. Mayorkas of high crimes and misdemeanors for his handling the illegal immigration crisis at the southern border. “We’re going to try and resolve this issue as quickly as possible,” Mr. Schumer told reporters. “Impeachment should never be used to settle policy disagreements.”
The Senate will receive the articles from House impeachment managers Wednesday at 5 p.m. Democratic senators expect the articles to be dismissed or tabled with a simple majority vote as early as Thursday after brief debate. The refusal of a full trial would be a precedent-setting move and one that Mr. Schumer seemed confident he has the votes to achieve despite some vulnerable Senate Democrats up for reelection declining to stake out a position on whether to proceed.
