The heating payment worth up to £300 is set to become means-tested from this winter.
Nearly 10 million people over State Pension age are set to miss out on Winter Fuel Payments of up to £300 this year following new changes to the eligibility rules. Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced on Monday that only those in receipt of Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits will qualify for the annual heating bill help.
The decision to change the rules has drawn widespread criticism from charities, organisations, Martin Lewis and former pensions minister, Sir Steve Webb. He said: “It’s going to become EXTREMELY IMPORTANT for UK pensioners to claim Pension Credit if entitled to it. There’s more to Pension Credit than just the basic rates.”
Former Lib Dem pensions minister, Sir Steve Webb also took to social media shortly after the announcement. He wrote: “Big decision: ending Winter Fuel Payments - for this winter - for pensioners not on means-tested benefits. Ironically, could easily cost money because there will be a huge drive to increase take-up of benefits - happened when free TV licence limited to over 75s on Pension Credit.
“We understand the UK Government needs to make some tough choices, but this announcement demonstrates just how important it is for all older people facing financial hardship to receive the money they are entitled to. We also hope the new UK Government will take this opportunity to work cross party to determine what an adequate income in older age is and ensure that everybody receives it so that nobody lives in poverty in later life.
Alternatively, pensioners can contact the Pension Credit helpline directly to make a claim on 0800 99 1234 - lines are open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.Below is an overview of the benefit including who should check eligibility, how to go about it and how much you could get.
