A Cheltenham house sold so far above its reserve price the owners don’t know what they’ll spend the extra money on. But their kids have a few ideas. Find out what worked for them

The auction for the renovated three-bedroom house started strong with a $1.3m opening offer that had the reserve covered, but with six bidders active it wasn’t called on the market until $1.4m.

A creative industries worker, she said she normally remained aloof from interest rates, banking and real estate markets. With her family popping the champagne before 11am yesterday, she said it was clear buyers were not deterred and while people don’t like interest rates they had it in their heads that is just “part and parcel of where we are heading”.She added that she had yet to really comprehend the magnitude of the sale and said she wasn’t sure yet what the bonus money would mean for the family, but added her kids had already made requests for some new computer upgrades and games.
