Louise Gittins, the Labour leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, expressed optimism about the region's pursuit of a devolution deal. Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, and Warrington councils have jointly applied for a devolution agreement, aiming to elect their first mayor in May 2026. Gittins believes the government is now receptive to their proposals, citing their long-standing efforts to secure a devolution deal.
She emphasized the area's strategic position between the Liverpool City Region, Greater Manchester, and Wales, highlighting the positive impact of devolved powers in these regions.
