The circumstances around the shooting and condition of the officer were not immediately available.
A Chicago police officer heading home from his shift early Sunday was shot and killed, the "victim of the type of crime he was working against," the Chicago police superintendent said.
The officer, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
