Chicago's Buckingham Fountain closed after being dyed red overnight

CHICAGO — Buckingham Fountain in Chicago 's Grant Park will be closed 'until further notice' after it was vandalized overnight, according to the Chicago Park District.Video showed the water in the fountain had been dyed red.Social media photos showed the message, 'Gaza is bleeding,' scrawled on the plaza in front of the fountain.In a post on X, the park district said around 9:30 a.m., the fountain was closed 'effective immediately.

Contrary to what some may claim, Buckingham Fountain has nothing to do with Buckingham Palace. Kate Buckingham donated the fountain to Chicago in memory of her brother, Clarence.Architect Edward Bennett—a longtime associate of the legendary Daniel Burnham—designed the fountain along with French sculptor Marcel François Loyau and engineer Jacques Lambert.Buckingham Fountain's display uses as much as 15,000 gallons of water per minute, and sprays water 150 feet into the air.
