Erik Cox, 18, of Rolling Meadows, and Shealyn Sherwood, 18, of Hoffman Estates, were killed June 2, 2024 when they were struck by another vehicle while changing a flat tire roadside on I-290 in Chicago. Ashanti Gates, 21, of the 1200 block of South Keeler Avenue, in Chicago, is charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, a Class 2 felony; reckless homicide, a Class 3 felony; misdemeanor child endangerment; and was cited for other traffic violations, according to the Illinois State Police – whose troopers responded to the scene of the collision.
Then on Monday, the Cook County state’s attorney’s office approved charges against Gates, ISP officials said. “It is with profound sadness that I share with you the unexpected passing of 2024 Rolling Meadows graduate Erik Cox,” RMHS Principal Megan Kelly stated in the notice. “Erik was a wonderful young man with a bright future. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends, and we ask that you please keep them all in your thoughts and hearts during this incredibly difficult time.”
