Former child star Claude Jarman Jr., known for his role in the classic film 'The Yearling,' has passed away at the age of 90.
Claude Jarman Jr., a former child star and one of only 12 recipients of the Juvenile Academy Award, has died at the age of 90. His wife of 38 years, Katie, told The Hollywood Reporter that Jarman died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes. Jarman's journey to Hollywood began in 1934 when he was discovered in an MGM talent search. Director Clarence Brown, scouting for children for his film The Yearling, visited Jarman's fifth-grade classroom.
Jarman was cast as Jody, a young boy who adopts a fawn in the film, set against the backdrop of the US Civil War. The Yearling earned Jarman the Juvenile Oscar, presented to him by inaugural winner Shirley Temple. Jarman went on to star in 10 more films, including John Wayne westerns Rio Grande and the Disney production The Great Locomotive Chase. He also appeared in the Lassie movie The Sun Comes Up. Jarman's early success was marked by a privileged life on the MGM lot, where he was educated alongside classmates like Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Powell. He was even included in a commemorative photo for MGM's 25th anniversary in 1949, standing alongside Hollywood legends like Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Errol Flynn, Angela Lansbury, and Lassie. Before his passing, Jarman was the last surviving person in that iconic photograph. In 2018, Jarman published his book My Life and the Final Days of Hollywood
