Childcare warning as number of people qualifying in early years education 'set to slump 90%' 🔴 HugoGye
By contrast, only 2,150 students started a T-level in education and childcare, with a majority of those specialising in early years. The other options for the T-level are training to be a teaching assistant or provide support to students.
Unless the number of people on the T-level dramatically increases, there will be a significant slowdown the supply of qualified workers from next year.: “The Government is pulling the rug out from underneath our early years sector. Unless ministers U-turn now, the recruitment pipeline for early years staff could be on the brink of collapse.
“Parents won’t thank the Chancellor for providing more free childcare hours if their local nursery has shut due to lack of qualified staff. It seems the Conservatives are prepared to do childcare on the cheap even if our children’s education suffers. Scrapping BTECs and other childcare qualifications before T-levels have proved their success is a recipe for disaster.”
T-levels are designed to provide a vocational alternative to A-levels which carry the same level of esteem and can be a pathway to a university course or skilled job. Skills minister, Robert Halfon, said: “The department is introducing T-levels in a phased approach. The number of providers will increase year on year, and student numbers are expected to grow significantly over the next few years.”
