A children's carol service organized by a housing association in England was criticized for promoting Christianity, despite tenants overwhelmingly supporting the event.

A children's carol service organized by Prestwich and North Western Housing Association at its Rectory Green complex was criticized for 'promoting Christianity'. Kids from St Mary's CE Primary School sang carols and Christmas songs and performed dances at the outdoor event. The association's CEO said the singing was 'enjoyed by all', describing it as 'a delight'. But there was a complaint prior to the event happening, objecting to the religious nature of the carol singing.

The association's December newsletter read: 'I have received a complaint that the event promotes Christianity and should not be repeated in the future. When we agreed to help support this event, we had no intention of causing offence to anyone.' Prestwich and North Western bosses are now gauging the views of those who live at Rectory Green. So far, 20 percent of tenants – around 40 – have responded. Every one said they support the event. Prior to the carol event, tenants volunteered to decorate a Christmas tree and clear up the area after Storm Darragh hit the previous weekend. The housing association served mince pies and mulled wine to adults. Mike Corfield, CEO of Prestwich and North Western, said: 'This is the second year that the children's carol singing event has taken place. The original idea came from a member of the local community, and we thought it was a good one so were happy to work with the St Mary's to make it happen. Lots of the tenants were involved, putting up decorations and lights to make the area look suitably festive. In fact, without the incredible support and hard work of a small group of involved tenants there is no way the event would have happened. The children and teachers put in lots of time rehearsing and really seemed to enjoy themselves on the night
