The incident, called as close distance maneuvering, “constrained the maneuvering space” of BRP Malabrigo which is a “clear” violation of the 1972 International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea , according to Abu. It was not clear though if the DFA has already filed a diplomatic protest against China due to the recent incident.
The Haijing 3305 had previously been sighted while patrolling Bajo de Masinloc, also known as Scarborough Shoal or Panatag Shoal. The shoal is located 124 nautical miles west of Zambales and is within the Philippines’ 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone . The second and third incidents involved two CCG vessels with bow numbers 3301 and 3103 that conducted close distance maneuvering with BRP Capones and BRP Sindangan during a maritime capability enhancement exercises on June 1 and 2, 2021.
