CHINA has reiterated its rejection of the 2016 ruling in favor of the Philippines as it claimed that the arbitration case brought by Manila against Beijing was 'pure political drama' orchestrated by the United States . In a landmark ruling on July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands found no legal basis for China's 'nine-dash line' for claiming the South China Sea.

Wang added, 'The US invokes its Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines at every turn in an attempt to intimidate China, but it will not weaken our resolve and will to safeguard China's legitimate and lawful rights and interests.'Wang was asked to comment on the filing of a diplomatic protest by the Department of Foreign Affairs before the Chinese Embassy in Manila over the February 6 harassment of a Philippine Coast Guard vessel by a Chinese Coast Guard ship.
