Murray Watt says Beijing has removed sanctions for five abattoirs that lost export licences in 2020 amid diplomatic spat
China has lifted suspensions from Australian beef exporters, removing almost all of the $20bn worth of trade sanctions it imposed.
The abattoirs lost their export licences to China four years ago due to technical issues including mislabelling and the product certification code. It was one of nine Australian commodities that Beijing slapped sanctions on in May 2020 at the height of a diplomatic spat between the two countries, after the former Morrison governmentSanctions remain on two abattoirs and on rock lobster exports. Three other abattoirs had their licences restored in December.
With renewed access to Australia’s largest trading partner, producers of barley, cotton, oaten hay and timber have had their exports swell by more than $3bn over the past year and a bit.“We have repeatedly said we will seek to cooperate with China where we can, disagree where we must and engage in our national interest,” he said.
