China has advanced plans to float a series of nuclear reactors on the contested South China Sea, in an effort to gain a greater foothold in the disputed waters.Despite reportedly suspending the project over safety concerns a year ago, China is moving ahead with plans to put nuclear reactors onto the sea, some of which is claimed by nations including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.
'Malaya also said that that the United States and other Western nations, including Australia, are expected to increase their joint patrols in the South China Sea to counterbalance China's expanding influence.The International Atomic Energy Agency has called for stringent international guidelines to ensure the safe operation of marine-based nuclear reactors.
