China Raises Alarm Over New Virus Spreading to India

A new virus, the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), has spread from China to India, causing concern among health officials. Cases involving infants have been confirmed in Bengaluru, triggering fears reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic. HMPV, a respiratory virus that causes cold and flu-like symptoms, can lead to severe complications in vulnerable groups. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for HMPV.

Cases of the human metapneumovirus involving infants – first, a three-month-old girl and later, an eight-month-old boy – have now been confirmed in India.
