China resumed military exercises around the island of Taiwan, days after carrying out a two-day war game exercise.

China continues to run military drills around the island of Taiwan after the inauguration of Taiwan ’s new president, who has expressed support for formal independence in the past. China has resumed military activity around Taiwan amid ongoing tensions over a speech by the latter’s president during his inauguration this month.

The war games, which China says was “punishment” for an inauguration speech by the newly sworn-in president of Taiwan — where president Lai Ching-te said China and Taiwan are “not subordinate to each other”, which Beijing took as a defacto statement of independence — involved warships and aircraft which moved provocatively into Taiwanese waters and airspace.

Eighteen of these aircraft reportedly crossed over the median line of the Taiwan Strait, flying into Taiwanese airspace at several points around the island. Tsai added that the show of force was also for a Chinese domestic audience, to show that China “has absolute control over the situation in the Taiwan Strait.”
